Drawing Realistic Textures
WORKSHOP DATE: March 2nd - 3rd, 2024 LOCATION: Paint the Town Citrus Art Gallery Tampa Florida |
If you sit down to draw and begin by picking up the same pencils, using the same type of paper - regardless of your subject, and expect to produce a realistic looking drawing like the ones you admire on the internet, this is one of the big mistakes you are making.
By the end of this workshop you will understand how to choose the right techniques and tools to give any subject the depth and realism you've been striving for.
The System I Use
Before putting pencil to paper, I analyze the various textures and values in the subject, and have plan for how to go about recreating them. I have a series of questions I ask myself about the nature of the textures I'll be drawing. Then, I use what I call my "Texture Recipes"' to decide on the tools and techniques I'll use to recreate them. I layout a game plan for every drawing I do and this is exactly what you'll will learn in this class.
Through demonstrations and step-by-step guidance you'll follow along and learn to:
Below are some of the specific textures you'll learn:
Glass, Liquid, Reflective Metal, Flowers, Rustic Pitted Metal, Fabric, Wood, Stone, Stucco, Paper, Tape, Hair, Fur, Beards,
Ont he second day of class, you'll work on a final project that includes a still life of a metal cup and a flower. (Photo Coming Soon!)

Student Testimonials
"Awesome! The atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly encouragement is set by JD. What a nice guy. Plus, he knows stuff and shares whatever he knows. It's fun and informative. I want to attend more!
Joyce, Austin TX "I had the most helpful, fun, learning experience I have ever had in my life. I have learned sooo much it's unbelievable. I loved this workshop!" Zeinab, TX "JD’s comments are very valid and help to see details that make your drawing more realistic and life-like. All students are at different levels in their drawing journey, but each of us get instruction specific to our needs. If you are even thinking of taking a workshop, drop what you are doing and sign up. You won’t regret it and you will be a better artist." Mary Ann Marreel, Iowa "What I found most helpful was the individual critique of my artwork. I knew it was lacking, but didn't know what to do to make my drawings look more dimensional. I now have the knowledge and tools to make my work so much better. The class was a fantastic experience for me and it is just what I needed to take my drawing to the next level. I learned so much and your ability to joke with the class made it that much more fun. I will be returning to take more classes. It was well worth the price!" Cathy, South Jordan, UT |
"I discovered J.D. Hillberry’s book in the library of the University where I teach in Brazil, and realized that I needed to see his work and classes with my own eyes. The workshop exceeded all my expectations. It was simply overwhelming… place, organization, materials, techniques, friendliness, and the incredible ability of J.D. to transmit knowledge and experience to his students. I learned a lot and intend to come back soon. Above all, I realized that it possible to be a brilliant artist and an amazing person at the same time - as JD Hillberry is!”
Ana C– Architecture Professor and Artist - Brazil "This workshop is a good opportunity for any average drawer to become advanced!" L. M., Anacortes, WA I have been playing with graphite for 30 years but my drawings looked washed out. I have taken four classes from JD and my drawings have improved 1000%. I have learned so much about blending, contrast and realism. I learn something new with every class I take. I always walk in feeling intimidated and walk out with an amazing drawing. JD is an excellent teacher and I highly recommend his classes for artists of all levels. Sandy, Phoenix, AZ JD Hillberry is a highly experienced artist who is willing to share the ins and outs of drawing with a ton of knowledge of what works to help anyone create a realistic drawing. With his help I have improved a 110% Mr. Hillberry is a great teacher that wants to share his understanding of drawing with others he gives great constructive criticism of your artwork and wants to help you improve, anyone young or old new or experienced would benefit from a class from JD Hillberry! "The supplies were really great. I like the room set-up. No matter where you are in the room, you can see the demonstrations."
H. L., Spring TX "My recent works showing my newly learned skills are proof of what knowledge can do! The amount learned in three days is worth years of art school. The class was fabulous. It was much more than I expected. A very relaxed atmosphere and very supportive teaching. Thank you for a wonderful experience." W. G., Riverside, IL "I appreciated your generosity. It's impressive that you would share your techniques so openly and completely. Learning your techniques took some of the mystery/intimidation out of certain aspects of drawing. It's really great to feel capable of drawing a portrait to my satisfaction. Lisa M., Houston, TX "This was my second workshop with JD and I'm looking forward to my third one. for any one who wants to take their abilities to a new level, these workshops are a must." K. D., Methuen, MA "I have taken 4 workshops and I learn something new and valuable each time. My journey to be a better artist would not have happened without the help of this very excellent teacher."
